So, what did I learn? You can train but you will still be shocked! Why? Well, thats easy. If you are the normal runner you always want to go faster. That catches up to you in the last 3-4 miles. I TRIED to keep a steady slow pace for the first 8-9 miles but failed.
BUT! I kept plugging away and pushed with the help of Josh Gum (revgum on tumblr) and finished under a 10 minute average!
So, got ahead of myself … We started out as a group of 3. Yes, Josh and I finished under 10 but the real stud of the group was our buddy Brendan.
At around mile 4-ish he got a flat … to explain … his calf popped or locked up. He immediately yelled (a bad word-use your imagination). The 2nd thing he said? “Go, I’ll catch”
He was hurting, and you now what? He ALMOST did! ABSOLUTELY SICK!!!
He stretched, stopped at an aid station, stretched some more, had to walk a little and only finished a few minutes after Josh and me.
And I cannot stop this post without a HUGE shout out to Mrs. Gum. Wendie, just like Brendan, Josh and I, had a new personal record … and she got to run with not 1, but 2(!) Wonder Women!!!
This was a great event for us … even though it was not very well handled logistically! It took us 80 minutes to go the last mile to the parking area!
Last topic of discussion … we have a commitment from a member of our crew that next year he will complete a half marathon. Yep, I am talking about you Justyn Penfold! Brendan Turpin and I are going to kick your A$$ so you are more ready for the half than we were!!!!
